On Theology of the Body
Unveiled Innocence: A Closer Look at the Theology of the Body
Christopher T. Baglow offers a thorough look at the Theology of the Body in this two day series. Beginning with the often overlooked principles upon which the Theology of the Body is founded, Baglow brings audiences through the philosophical and theological implications of John Paul II’s masterwork.
A. Genius, Liberal, Prophet: An Introduction to the Pope and His Sexual Revolution
This introductory talk sets the stage for understanding John Paul II’s approach to the human person and to sexuality. By considering John Paul II as genius, liberal and prophet, Baglow shows how the Pope stands ordinary prejudices and assumptions on their heads in his approach.
B. Let’s Get (Meta)physical: JPII and the History of Thought About the Human Person
It is impossible to understand the Theology of the Body without understanding what went before it. In this talk, Baglow explains the Pope’s answer to three crucial questions about the human person that he inherited from history. His answers to these questions are the fabric from which the Theology of the Body is woven.
C. “To Boldly Go Where No Pope Has Gone Before”: JPII, Navigator of the Human Heart
Long before the Theology of the Body, there was Love and Responsibility, the Pope’s first expedition into the depths of the human heart. This pre-papal philosophical masterpiece is often overlooked in attempts to understand the Theology of the Body. In this talk, Baglow explains how John Paul II brings his genius to probe realities like chastity, sensuality, and even psychology.
D. Back to the Beginning: Original Solitude
The foundation of the Theology of the Body is JPII’s analysis of original solitude. After a brief introduction to the themes and issues involved in the Theology of the Body, Baglow discusses the dynamics of human solitude, a reality involving nothing less than the deepest realities of the human soul.
E. “Love Plus One”: Original Nakedness and Original Unity
Central to the Pope’s Theology of the Body is his consideration of the nuptial meaning of the body as revealed in Genesis 2. In this presentation, the glorious reality of human love captured by JPII is explained and explored.
F. Original Shame, Secondary Innocence: The Redemption of Sexual Love
Key to understanding the Theology of the Body is to understand the dynamics of sexuality and love as they exist in a world deeply damaged by sin. In this talk, JPII’s consideration of the reality of sin and its effects on human love are considered, in order to understand the redemption of our sexuality by Christ.
G. Pathways to Eden I: Obstacles and Dead-Ends
Using the Pope’s insight, the various evils plaguing sexuality today are considered through the lens of the Theology of the Body. This talk reveals how the prophetic call of John Paul II is a crucial part of overcoming the challenges of contemporary culture.
H. Pathways to Eden II: The Spirituality of Marital Unity
The Theology of the Body is a exciting invitation to live marriage according to God’s plan. In this concluding talk, Baglow explains the implications of the Pope’s Theology of the Body for life together in marriage through a consideration of the Pope’s explanation of Ephesians 5 and the Song of Songs.
